Author Denise Gard releases a haunting and emotionally resonant story inspired by real-life tragedy
Award-winning storyteller and performer Denise Gard returns with her second novel, When The Rooster Crows, a gripping work of literary fiction that examines the fragile line between grief and madness—and the hope that can still be found in the darkest corners of loss.
The novel follows Dante, a man consumed by thoughts of “if only” and “what if” after the disappearance of the woman he loves, Lyra.
Tormented by guilt and uncertainty, Dante is admitted to a state hospital, where he meets Dr. Montgomery, a grieving psychiatrist who has lost his wife and is searching for purpose. As their lives intertwine, both men must confront the terrifying possibility that hope can be as destructive as it is sustaining. When the symbolic rooster crows, each must decide what it means—and what truths they are finally ready to face.
When The Rooster Crows is ideal for book clubs—complete with discussion questions—as well as readers who enjoy psychological fiction, literary fiction, and stories that explore the human mind under extreme emotional pressure.
